Unicredit Bulbank: Reimagined

1

Audit

Through a screen-by-screen analysis, I identified usability issues that could cause friction in the transfer experience.

Hypotheses

Navigation

Users may struggle to locate the correct transfer option due to inconsistent placement of CTAs and unclear categorization.

Payment options

Users may not understand the differences between SEPA, international, and domestic transfers, leading to unnecessary decision-making and potential errors.

Transparency

Users may feel uncertain about transaction costs because fees, exchange rates, and final amounts aren’t displayed clearly before confirming a transfer.

Payment options

Although this is a personal project and I was mainly going off of my personal experience I did manage to validate some of the hypotheses with acquaintances who use the product.

🗣️ I don’t use the app too regularly and always have to think twice about where to start a transfer. - Ivan, 37
🗣️ I keep seeing charges for fees and am always shocked about how high they are even when transferring between my accounts, but I never see them when I do the transfers. -
Petya, 42

Authentication

Personal code verification may feel outdated and less secure compared to FaceID, potentially reducing user confidence in transaction security.

Competitor analysis

I analyzed Wise, Revolut, and BBVA and identified potential room for improvement in comparison:

  • Merge transfer types—let the app determine the right option.

  • Surface fees, conversion rates, and arrival estimates earlier.

  • Reduce steps—prioritize recent recipients and saved contacts.

  • Offer FaceID authentication for faster, more secure confirmations.

BBVA

Structured navigation, QR code payments, and mobile number transfers.

Revolut

Quick access to frequent recipients, home-screen actions, and multiple payment methods (e.g., Apple Pay).

Wise

Clear currency conversion, upfront fee breakdown, and automatic transfer type selection.

4

Improved flow

I streamlined the process by:

  • Merging all transfers under a single “Send Money” flow

  • Automatically selecting the correct transfer type

  • Displaying fees, exchange rates, and final amounts upfront

  • Prioritizing recent recipients for quick selection

  • Replacing personal code verification with FaceID authentication

Wireframes

  • The "Send" and "Receive" actions are now surfaced on the home screen, eliminating the need to navigate through multiple tabs.

  • Cleaner forms with persistent input labels for better accessibility.

  • Simplified account actions—no need to jump between sections.

  • Transparent confirmation screens where users can edit details without starting over.

  • Fees, exchange rates, and estimated arrival times are clearly displayed before confirmation, improving trust and predictability.

  • The most recent contacts are prioritized, allowing for faster and more intuitive transactions.

  • FaceID or biometric authentication is seamlessly integrated for quicker and more secure confirmations.

Validation

To confirm these improvements, I’d:

  • Conduct user interviews to test ease of use

  • Run A/B tests to track completion rates and error reduction

  • Monitor drop-off points and support requests post-launch

  • Customer satisfaction

The new interface embraces:

  • A sleeker, minimalist, dark-themed aesthetic .

  • Refined typography

  • Subtle shadows and gradients add depth without clutter

  • Buttons, cards, and input fields follow a unified design language

  • Transactions, balances, and recipient details are structured with clear separation, improving scannability.

  • The deep blue tones give a modern and professional feel, reducing eye strain while maintaining strong contrast.
